I noticed a post from Phil, in another thread, saying that the version 1.0 of Expression Media has now been released. I was wondering when the 'free upgrade' emails are going to be sent out?

Regards,
John

I'm not sure EM development and EM marketing/sales are on the same page. The release is called a v1.0 RTM...basically ready to go. However they admit there are non working features in this release. There are also many unadressed issues that have been documented for some time.

Seems like Marketing was screaming for a release and development gave them this. The v1.0 RTM tag was put on it to make the world (Wall Street?) think that Expression Media was well on its way. Truth be told it looks like EM's budget swings largely to the marketing side and development is understaffed (Phils own quote was something like 'not large enough to squash bugs and add new features').

Thats all irrelevant though when you consider there is not one reason to 'upgrade' to EM 1.0.

Hi John,

I wasn't sure from your email if you'd seen the upgrade information here.

Hi, Phil,

I have read that release ... I received a mailshot that contained a link to it. I am registered as I bought version 2 and an upgrade to 3 through the iView website. What has me confused is a statement you made on the second page of the thread, "So, is this the new software?", where you state

"Expression Media 1.0 is released and available online. I hope we can release an update fairly soon with the XML import/export turned back on.".

I was not sure whether this meant released for purchase or released for preview/trial. If it is the former I was hoping to see an upgrade key turning up in my mailbox soon :)

No email from MS yet.

I'll keep using the app to the bitter end cause there just isn't a good alternative on the Mac for the way I use it (tried them all, believe me).

The Expression Media icons are ugly, the changes to the GUI are questionable, the no-way-to-turn-off Splash Screen is ugly (What the hell is that woman doing? Dancing?), the - Windows Live ID - steps you have to take to download the installer are absurd (from a Mac-user point of view), even the name of the application is horrible.

So far I am not impressed what one of the biggest software developers in the world have done with this app.

The info page linked by Phil above has now been updated to state that the emails will be sent to registered MediaPro3 customers on 1 June 2007.

Waving goodbye to MediaPro? Waving goodbye to Expression Media? Or both?

If it's the same woman who's on this web site, I do not like the image.

A hallucination of one, or two, or three women, back turned, either waving goodbye to us or hello to someone who is not us. We don't see faces...just double rear ends.

It's a very strange image.

You know, marketing is both an art and a science. There are fleets of people that do nothing but develop marketing plans for large corporations, and large corporations willing to spend gobs of money on marketing plans. That being said, just who decided that a person with their back turned to the end user during the splash screen was a brilliant idea? Is it representative of:

1. Microsoft turning their back and ignoring the end user?
2. Microsoft looking to potential buyers, leaving us behind because the courtship of a new purchase with us is over?

It may not seem serious, but with all the fuss over product placement, registered colors, air time, etc., I'd think that something as bizarre as this wouldn't be overlooked. Whatever the meaning for the image, it is a terrible concept. Not visually interesting and even somewhat distracting.

I have received an email from iView today with a url to 'claim my upgrade'. On the claim-page I had to select my operating system and one click later a serial number was shown and emailed to me a few minutes later.

BUT Microsoft Expression Media tells me...

Exactly the same has happened to me. I've also tried my iView serial number which doesn't work either.

Great start Microsoft!

It just gets better and better. I never wanted to admit it before when people complained of Microsoft taking over this product, but they were right. What a mess...

Well, I figured what the heck, Iíll give it a try since I received my email notification this morning. I selected my OS (Vista) and was immediately given a serial number. The problem is I canít get it to install. When I click on the downloaded file it starts Adobe Go Live. Apparently the file extension is .SMI and I donít have anything to run it. Any suggestions?

Okay, so I got my e-mail. I followed the link, and I am asked to choose my platform from the following:

1. Mac OSX 10.3.9+
2. Windows Vista
3. Windows XP
4. Windows XP/Vista and Mac OSX 10.3.9+

So, I'm currently on XP but will be going to Vista within the month or so. Which one do I choose? Does it really matter?

I chose Vista, but when you get to the download link it displays XP/Vista. The problem is the downloaded file has a .SMI extension which I think is associated with the Mac OS.

No, "SMI" is yet another error made my Microsoft. Rename the extension "MSI" and the installer should work properly.

SMI stands for 'self mounting image' and is an old Mac OS File Extension. I've downloaded it and it won't even mount on my Mac.

Seems like I am lucky not having got my e-mail, yet ... Especially since I decided to wait with installing until MEM becomes more than a step back from MP 3.1.3.

Isn't it unfortunate that Microsoft screwed it big time just as the usual suspects suspected? I am getting the impression someone at MS has a very skewed sense of humour, really trying to get the company a bad rep. Everything else I wrote today over at MS's own MEM news group.

Sad.

Interesting snafu, although I think in this case it's just a typo. But then, who really knows? Maybe the shadow...

According to posts on the EM groups, "SMI" when changed to "MSI" does allow the installer to work on Windows. As I posted earlier, this is yet another Microsoft blunder (typo in the file extension), made worse by this post on the EM groups, where users are talking about fixing the file extension on the downloaded product:

Quote:
Hello, Chris!

Your solution worked as advertisted, for me too!

I had called Microsoft, and after several phonecalls and several+1 redirects
to some other number, I finally reached a person who informed my that my OS
was at fault. Being unconvinced, I ended any try to get help from MS.

Whilst I had no idea as to the correct fix, I was convinced that there'd
been a mistake, and you were right on! Thanks.

Apparently according to this post, Microsoft indicates that we are making the mistake and not them. Typical, I suppose, of how this entire situation has been handled. They make mistakes and it becomes our fault.

So I suppose it's our fault that the serial numbers don't work either, huh? They could have saved everyone the trouble and just taken the product off the market and told everyone that they didn't want IVMP to succeed.

Thanks ifonline,

Worked perfectly once I changed the extension.
It took my serial number too.

I'll play with it later,

No problem, but I wonder why people are having trouble with the serial numbers and you didn't. Odd... could you post your version (including build) number?

1.0.8076.0 here. It's the version I downloaded when V1 was "released."

The Mac installer throws a generic error at me and won't finish the installation (OS 10.3.9). It's probably just as well... :?

I was just starting to see this trend. Doesn't bode well for Microsoft arguing that they will continue to support the Mac, now does it?

Same ol, same ol. Invalid license number. How about a poll on how long it takes to straighten out the license snafu:

1 - 1 day
2 - 2 days
3 - 3 days
4 - a week

The serial numbers are different for Mac and Windows, and will not work on the alternate platform.

If you use Expression Media on both platforms, you will need to select that from the pop-up and get both serial numbers.

Doug:

How do we get the license number to work for the Mac? I tired the one sent me in an email (the same as I got at the designated web site) and it's not valid. Did they send me a PC license number?

So what is the combined choice for (the last option in the drop down box)? That is what I picked and the PC number works while the Mac one doesn't.

Right. I have just installed the Windows version of Expression Media on my Parallels/XP-configuration on my MacBook and entered my (non-working) Mac product key. Guess what? It was accepted!

So it turns out Microsoft only generates Windows serials so far.

Silly silly silly.

I have send an email to order(at)iview-multimedia.com (I received my serial from this address). No reply so far. I hope they will solve this issue soon.

Just received the mails now. Downloaded from the link (version 1.0.8076.0) and entered the serial from the second mail. Seems to work okay.
